Do I need to be an accounting influencer?

Relax - no dancing reels required.

Future clients aren’t looking for influencers. They’re looking for reassurance - and evidence of humans.

For decades, accounting firms built trust offline - through:

  • Word-of-mouth (ambient trust)

  • Referrals (reputational trust + action)

  • Long-standing relationships (embedded trust that transcends generations)

Social media hasn’t replaced these, it’s simply made the signals of trust more visible.

When many professionals hear ‘social media’, they hear ‘daily posting’ and ‘I must become a personality.’

Understandably, the instinct is to hide in client files.

But, no… you don’t have to make social media about yourself.

Social media helps potential clients answer basic questions:

  • Who would I be dealing with?

  • Do these people sound credible?

  • Are they the right fit for me?

  • Do they seem current?

  • Do others trust them?

The real risk isn’t about personal brand. It’s being invisible.

The new generation of business owners will take word-of-mouth or a referral and research before they reach out. They check your website, LinkedIn, Google reviews and whether you’re ‘active’.

They’re asking: Are these advisers operating in the modern business environment?

The IRD Effect

Firms have something most businesses didn’t… A built-in reminder system: The work repeats. The deadlines are fixed. The client comes back.

Most businesses don’t have the IRD or ATO sending customers back every year. Digital Marketing isn’t optional for them.

So, if you advise businesses who are navigating a digital world, it helps if your firm shows up in it.

Most firms don’t have a strategy problem. They have a starting problem.

Spoiler: Starting is awkward AF. Wanna see the bloopers from our first shoot day… (spew!)?

It gets easier, faster, more natural.  It stops feeling like cringe marketing and starts feeling like modern communication.

If you’re not sure where to start, start with visibility.

An audit (we like to call it a pulse check) outlines your current reality and where to go next: where your quickest wins lie, and the longer-term activities that will build momentum for you, given your objectives.

From there, it’s building consistency until showing up online feels normal. You don’t need a personal brand. You just need a visible one.

Business owners increasingly expect their advisers to understand the world they operate in - a world where visibility, brand and digital presence matter.

Remember when some firms said paperless would never catch on….?
